Despite all of your precautions, one of these days your furry buddy just may
meet a skunk and end up perfumed. There are lots of commercial preparations and home remedies
that promise to get rid of the smell, but the recipe that follows has become extremely popular
because it is so effective.
Shampoo this mixture into the fur, let it stand for about 15-20 minutes and then rinse out very thoroughly. Be very careful not to get it into your dog's eyes (or your eyes,
for that matter).
- One quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide
- One-fourth cup baking soda
- One teaspoon liquid soap
The secret to this recipe's effectiveness is the chemical change that takes
place, changing the skunk essence into sulfonic acid, a completely odorless chemical.
It might be tempting to mix up a batch of this and keep it handy, just in case, but don't do it - the peroxide and baking soda are natural reactants and it just might explode
while in storage!
